Small-/Medium- Wind
Straightforward mathematical and numerical techniques can be used to build useful models of small- and medium-sized wind turbines. At present, we are working on a platform that can be used to underpin small- and medium-sized wind turbine design and standards development.
The core of the model is a blade-element/momentum implementation.
Important aspects of turbine system design include, for example, over-speed control. These models can also be used for diagnostics and the design of intelligent control systems.
The graph, below, shows recorded experimental data, from a small (~ 2 m diameter) test system, overlaid with output from the latest draft of the model. The model takes as its input 1-minute average data from the meteorological mast adjacent to the test stand.
